Sending Prescriptions in Office Ally

Office Ally users can send prescriptions electronically through our e-prescribe module. Below, we’ll walk through how to access and use the module from both EHR 24/7 and Practice Mate.

Before We Begin

To prescribe medications in Office Ally, your account must have E-Prescribe activated. This includes completing ID proofing via ID.me and attending the OA-RX Webinar. Accessing the E-Prescribe Module

You’ll access the prescription module following different steps depending on whether you are using EHR 24/7 or Practice Mate.

From EHR 24/7

Ensure that your SOAP note layout includes the Medications section. Next, navigate to Manage Office, then to User, and then to SOAP Note Layouts. and select your custom layout.

  1. Go to the patient’s chart and hover over Progress Notes in the menu.
  1. Select your custom SOAP note layout.
  1. Scroll down in the note until you see the Online E-Prescription button on the right-hand side (below the Procedures section).
  1. Click this button to access the module.

If you do not see the Online E-Prescription button in the note, verify the Provider on the note has e-Prescribe enabled, that the Medications section is enabled for the SOAP Note Layout selected, and that the Encounter Date is not before e-Prescribe was enabled for the Provider on the note.

From Practice Mate

  1. Navigate to the Manage Patients tab in the main menu.
  1. Use the search bar at the top to find the patient.
  1. In the results, locate the eRX column and click the icon in the row for the correct patient.
  1. On the patient’s e-prescribe page, click the Online E-Prescription button (located in the top or bottom right corner) to launch the module.

Sending a Prescription

Once you’ve accessed the module, follow these steps to send a prescription:

  1. Select a Pharmacy
  • In the top-left of the screen, search for and select the patient’s preferred pharmacy.
  1. Search for Medication
  • Under the Medication Search section, type at least three characters of the medication name and click Search.
  • From the search results, click Select next to the correct medication
  1. Complete Sig Information
  • On the Sig Information page, complete the following:
  • Action
  • Amount
  • Dosage Form
  • Route
  • Frequency

  • You may also add directions to the Additional Directions field.

  • Set Days’ Supply, Dispense Amount, and Refills.

  • Choose a Problem/DX from the drop-down if needed.

  • Add Pharmacy Notes, if needed.
  • (Optional) Check Store Sig & Add to Prescriber’s List to save this sig for future use.
  • (Optional) Check DAW/DNS to prevent substitution.

Click Update to add the medication to the Pending Medications section.

  1. Process the Medication
  • In the Pending Medications section, review the information.
  • Edit or remove medications as needed.
  • Click Process Medications (bottom right) to continue to Interaction Checking.

Interaction Checking

On the Interaction Checking page, review any alerts for:

  • Drug interactions (minor/moderate)
  • Pregnancy or pediatric/geriatric warnings
  • Dosage issues or duplicate therapies

You may optionally enter an override reason. Click Proceed to Review Page to continue.

Review and Submit Prescription

Final Review

  • Verify Patient Information at the top of the screen.
  • Verify the Provider information.
  • Review or change the selected Pharmacy.
  • Review the Pending Prescriptions list and confirm office details.

Submitting Medications

For Non-Controlled Substances

  • Select medications from the Pending Prescriptions list.
  • Click Submit Medications (bottom of the page).

For Controlled Substances

  • Select medications from the Pending Prescriptions list.
  • Enter your Office Ally password and OTP code from the ID.me Authenticator App.
  • Click Digitally Sign/Send (Note: You must complete ID proofing to send controlled substances).

Confirmation

  • You’ll see a message confirming that the prescription was sent successfully – or confirming there were errors that require correction before another attempt to prescribe.
  • You may have the option to print a summary or prescription coupon.
  • Click Close to return to the main e-prescribe module.
